There are various names by which document and content repositories go; i.e. Electronic Content Management (ECM), Digital Asset Management (DAM), Document Management System (DMS), Knowledge Management Systems (KMS), Enterprise Information Portals (EIP) and many more. For our purpose, we will call all of them as "Information Repositories".

Information Repositories provide value by allowing enterprises to capture, arrange, collaborate, manage and archive information. From an information security perspective they allow users to define and control the access of information. However this access control is applicable till the time the information is within the Repository e.g. Documents uploaded into the system can be controlled for access only till the time they are downloaded and not thereafter. This means that information; once it leaves the Repository can be viewed, edited, printed by and forwarded to any person. |
Similarly, in a "Process Repository" like Workflow systems and Business Process Management (BPM) systems, as information flows through the process, different users should ideally have different rights to the information and such rights should change as the workflow progresses.
