Fugro Survey Prevents Leaks to Competitors and Solves 95% of Its Security Threats with Seclore

Global geoscience services provider Fugro Survey needed a solution to prevent its proprietary reports from leaking to competitors. The company turned to Seclore’s Data-Centric Security Platform and now has the power to protect and control its sensitive digital assets, no matter where they travel.

The Challenge
Losing revenue due to poor data security and leaked reports
A global leader in the field of marine survey, geotechnical investigation, and geoscience services, Fugro Survey (Fugro) prepares survey reports for infrastructure and oil and gas firms, including India’s Oil and Natural Gas Corporation. Producing these reports is time consuming and expensive, requiring Fugro to invest heavily in subject matter experts and specialized equipment.
Being able to control access to these reports is critical to Fugro’s business. When some of these proprietary reports were leaked to competitors, Fugro suffered major business setbacks: competitors used the sensitive information to win contracts from clients that Fugro was targeting. “Our competitors had invested nothing. But with our reports in hand, they were able to bargain with end customers and win contracts,” says Bibhu Nyaka, Head of the Business Line at Fugro. “The leaked reports caused us to lose business.”
To combat additional leaks, Fugro took some preliminary security measures such as password-protecting its sensitive documents. But these measures proved ineffective, and the company needed a more robust method for controlling access to its valuable reports.
“Loss of reports means loss of business, so we want to keep the reports protected until we receive payment. By preventing leaks, Seclore has solved about 95% of our security threats and helped us gain a competitive edge.”

The Solution
Closing the security gap with Seclore
To address this security gap, Fugro turned to Seclore’s Enterprise Digital Rights Management (EDRM) solution, which empowers enterprises to protect and control sensitive digital assets with persistent, granular usage controls.
Using Seclore, Fugro’s administrators can now apply access and usage policies to its proprietary design drawings in order to restrict unauthorized use, copying, printing, or distributing of the files. They can also set these policies to expire at a specific time. Plus, Seclore enables them to remotely cancel access at any time, for example, when a contract with an external vendor expires.
In addition, Seclore eases Fugro’s administrative burden with minimal disruption for its employees. For its reports, the company uses AutoCAD, software that Fugro has to update at least once a year. Fugro discovered that other security solutions don’t always protect old versions of AutoCAD files. Seclore, on the other hand, not only protects different versions of AutoCAD files, but it does so while ensuring that there’s no change in the end-user experience.
The Results
Safeguarding files and increasing revenue
With Seclore, Fugro is now confident that they’ve put a stop to reports being leaked, and that sensitive information which could undermine deals or jeopardize revenue streams is always protected.
“Loss of reports means loss of business, so we want to keep the reports protected until we receive payment,” says Nayak. “By preventing leaks, Seclore has solved about 95% of our security threats and helped us gain a competitive edge.”
After seeing how Seclore protects Fugro’s information wherever it goes, other teams inside Fugro are now planning to adopt Seclore. In addition to protecting AutoCAD files, Seclore is also being used to protect the other files including MS Office, PDFs, and raw data files, which also need to be shared with external prospects and partners.
